Potential Complications of Magic Power Coffee®

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning against the use of Magic Power Coffee®, a dietary supplement marketed as a "romance enhancer" in men and women, due to potentially life-threatening decreases in blood pressure.

One of the active ingredients, known as hydroxythiohomosildenafil, could potentially cause a drastic drop in blood pressure when combined with other drugs, such as nitrates. Symptoms may include dizziness and lightheadedness.

Hydroxythiohomosildenafil is similar to the well-known product sildenafil (Viagra®), which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. While these products share some chemical properties, this does not make them therapeutically equivalent.

The FDA advises consumers who purchased Magic Power Coffee® to stop taking it immediately. The FDA also encourages patients to report any side effects to their healthcare providers.

Several herbs and supplements, such as horny goat weed and yohimbe bark extract, have been studied for their potential effects on libido and sexual dysfunction. For more information about these and other related therapies, please visit Natural Standard's Foods, Herbs & Supplements database.
